The term Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, is the title given to laypeople who have been asked to distribute the Holy Eucharist during Mass or to the homebound. Because the title is "Extraordinary Minister" this means, therefore, that there are ordinary ministers of Holy Communion. These ministers are those who have been ordained (bishops, priests, deacons). When there are not enough ordinary ministers to distribute Holy Communion, either because the number of people at Mass is too great or there are too many people for the priest to go see every month by himself, he can ask certain lay people to assist. If you are interested in participating in this ministry please talk to the pastor directly.
